Lumps and bumps on the canvas are the typical resulf or Diagonal Shell. 

 

Take a look at the first graph.  You will see how to make one Diagonal Shell.  Make four stitches on the canvas.  To complete the stitch, come up at A and back down at B catching the four parallel stitches.  All four parallel stitches should be tied together.  You are now ready to make the next stitch bundle.

 

Note:  you can stitch with one or two colors or threads depending upon the effect you wish to create.
