Belly Feathers Stitch

Needs Thinking

Uses:  Samplers,

Belly Feathers, created by Mary Lou Helgesen, is an intriguing stitch incorporating wool and pearl cotton for interest and texture.

To work Belly Feathers, first create the red lines with a wool.  You will travel over 4 intersections then 3, 2 and 1.  Stitch each row from corner to corner traveling in a zigzag fashion.  When the red is complete, insert the yellow crosses with another wool thread.  Last, the French Knots are filled in with pearl cotton.  (Black dots on the graph)

Although the original instructions called out for Persian wool yarn and pearl cotton, you can use any combination of threads or fibers.  It would be interesting if you stitch the crosses with a sparkle thread and French Knots with a metal.
