How to Measure an Odd Shaped Motif

Many times, the motif we would like to measure is an odd shaped one.  Take a look at the drawing on th right.  To find the area, we need to calculate ovals and recgtangles.  A quicker method is to use a "square incher."

An easy way to measure an odd shaped motif is to use a "square incher."  To make one, find a plastic sheet protector and mark a one inch grid with perminant marker.

Lay this over the area you wish to measure.  Start counting.  When you are determining how many square inches you have, incomplete blocks of stitches will appear.  Count the squares that are half full, as full squares.  Ignore the less than half full ones.  Add this to your total area.
